1. Generate small maps, its not going to hurt.
2. Use GMAbooster. You can get it at GMAbooster.com. Make sure you don't run it before the level is done generating. This actually makes a huge difference (1-20 fps constantly!), but it will get very hot.
3. Turn off sound, it does make a noticable difference.
4. Use a cooling pad. (Not neccessary, but these things get hot!)
Also, I've only tried this on /indev/, which seemed faster in the first place.
